2019-2020 Auditions 

Wind & Percussion Auditions: Monday, Oct 21, 6 pm at New Albany High School (Use Auditorium Entrance)

All String Auditions are at Floyd Central High School (Use Auditorium Entrance)

Mini-Orchestra Auditions: Thursday, August 29th 4 - 6 pm

 Festival & Philharmonic Auditions: 

  • Violins: Monday August 26th 4 - 8 pm & Tuesday, August 27th 4 - 8 pm
  •  Viola, Cello & Bass: Wednesday, August 28th 4 - 8 pm

The Mini-Orchestra meets from 4:30-5:30 on Mondays. Auditions for the Mini-Orchestra are free and open to any student through 8th grade. 


The Festival Orchestra meets from 6-7:30 on Mondays (new time) and The Philharmonic Orchestra meets from 6-8:30 on Mondays. Both are open to advanced string players by audition. There is a $25 Audition Fee.

Students should come prepared to play 90 seconds of a piece written for their instrument and a scale that shows how far they have advanced as a player. Students may be asked to sight-read.  Contact Kathy Johnson if you cannot make a posted audition time but still wish to audition. 

Members of the FCYS must be a member of their school orchestra (or band), if one is offered, and must be taking private lessons on their instrument. In addition, High School students earn class credit. The State of Indiana recognizes the Floyd County Youth Symphony as a class. High School students receive class credit for participation.  Grading is based upon attendance, participation and preparation. Important announcement

If NAFC schools are on a 2 hour delay, rehearsal or concerts will be held. If the NAFC schools are CLOSED, rehearsals or concerts  may have to be cancelled and concerts may have to be rescheduled. If NAFC schools cancels after-school activities, rehearsals are canceled and concert may have to be rescheduled.


As music educators and students, we set as our goals the following:

  • to improve and grow as musicians by performing the finest music in the orchestra repertoire.

  • to serve as a musical outreach to our community and increase awareness of the wealth of musical talent among our young people.

  • to provide opportunities for performing in various environments including concert tours appropriate to the ages and musical abilities of the students.

  • to encourage growth as citizens as well as musicians.
