SCHOOL ENSEMBLE MEMBERSHIP
FCYS is an extension of the school ensemble experience, not a substitute for it. Members of Floyd County Youth Symphony must be registered members of their school band or orchestra, if offered by their school. Students must perform on the same instrument in both FCYS and their school ensemble, if possible. The signature of your school ensemble director is required on the commitment certificate for membership in FCYS.
Weekly (or on a similar regular basis) private lessons from a qualified instructor for the student’s instrument are required for FCYS membership. The signature of your private lessons instructor is required on the commitment certificate for membership in FCYS.
As the FCYS Orchestras are once-a-week organizations with very high performance standards, a commitment to regular attendance is essential to the musical quality of the orchestras. Directors and fellow players expect all orchestra members to be present and prepared at every rehearsal and performance. Green absence forms must be submitted for all absences. Notice of absence from a rehearsal, for reasons other than sudden illness or other emergency, must be submitted in writing at least two weeks in advance for evaluation by the directors. Notice of absence from a Dress Rehearsal, for reasons other than sudden illness or other emergency, must be submitted in writing at least three weeks in advance for evaluation by the directors. More than two unexcused absences will negatively impact the student’s grade and seating in the orchestra, with excessive absences resulting in the student’s removal from FCYS.
Membership in the Philharmonic and Festival Orchestras includes the following fee requirements:

Membership in Mini-Orchestra does not include an audition fee but does have the following fee requirements:

The audition fee must be paid at the time of audition and is a requirement for membership. The November and February Payments may be paid at anytime prior to the first student rehearsal in November and February, respectively. Any or all fees may be raised through the fund-raising activities of FCYS. Any money raised over the fee requirements will be held in the student’s individual account and may be applied toward future expenses connected to FCYS including trips. Money from the student account can not be withdrawn, transferred to others (except siblings), or used for any purpose other than FCYS expenses.
